1982 Contemporary Triptychs

In 1979 Rubin and Galleries of the Claremont Colleges Director David W. Steadman co-curated the exhibition “Black and White are Colors: Paintings of the 1950s-1970s.” In his catalog essay, Rubin discussed the topic of duality. After noticing that numerous Los Angeles artists were using tripartite configurations in their art, Rubin turned from the number two to the number three and organized this exhibition.
