1989 Art About AIDS

Freedman Gallery, Albright College, Reading, PA

In the fall of 1989, Rubin received the first notice from the New York organization Visual AIDS calling for a national observance of World AIDS Day under the moniker of “A Day without Art.” Although the thinking was that closing a gallery for a day might raise consciousness about the AIDS epidemic, the curator knew that in Reading, PA, art was not part of the usual daily diet.  So, rather than close the gallery, he opted to organize an exhibition of contemporary art addressing the crisis and organized several related educational programs.
