1994-96 Old Glory: The American Flag in Contemporary Art
Phoenix Art Museum
The Phoenix Art Museum was the third venue for this exhibition that Rubin organized in 1994 at Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art. Rubin won his second Northern Ohio LIVE magazine Award of Achievement in Visual Arts for the exhibition following its debut in Cleveland. The exhibition documented the use of the America flag as an image or material in art from the 1950s through the early 1990s. When shown in Phoenix, where Rubin had by then taken the position of Curator of Twentieth Century Art, it created a national controversy and a two-month media circus, while boosting museum attendance and membership.
