Rubin was selected U.S. Commissioner of the 1996 Cuenca Bienal of Painting. His winning proposal was to exhibit paintings by American artists whose work emphasized the fragility of nature. The exhibition was shown at three Ecuadoran venues before a final stop at the Phoenix Art Museum.
