After visiting over 200 studios throughout Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas over a 9-month period, Rubin narrowed the field to just 18 artists. In his catalog essay “Considering Audience” he wrote about his three criteria for making curatorial choices: the work should be visually engaging; it should have a fresh and unfamiliar edge; it should have a fair degree of accessibility.
