2012 Adad Hannah: Intimate Encounters
San Antonio Museum of Art
Rubin discovered the Canadian artist’s work at one of the smaller hotel art fairs during Miami Basel. At the time, he was looking for something in contemporary photography or video that would be suitable for FotoSeptiembreUSA and also relate to “Aphrodite and the Gods of Love,” an exhibition of classical antiquities that SAMA was bringing in. Out of the corner of his eye, Rubin noticed a video work using images of Eros and Aphrodite from the Prado Museum in Madrid. Hannah often works with objects in different museum collections. At SAMA, he enlisted local volunteers to stage a variety of scenarios using objects mostly from the museum’s Asian collection. The resultant videos and photographs simulate late 19th century prints.
